Year 6

Welcome to Year 6!

For our entry Point, Year 6 became engineers!  We had to design and make our own fairground rides for a new fairground being built near by!  We thought carefully about who our target audience would be, how the ride would work and what materials were needed to create it!

Upcoming Year 6 Trips

We have a busy term ahead with many exciting trips and events planned. Please see key dates below:

  • Tuesday 8th May 2023 - Friday 12th May 2023- End of KS2 SATs
  • Thursday 18th May 2023 - Chessington World of Adventures Trip (TBC)
  • Monday 12th June 2023 - Friday 16th June 2023 - My Week in China (daily 1 hour online sessions exploring Chinese language and Culture)
  • Monday 19th June 2023- London Eye and London Eye River Cruise
  • Monday 10th July 2023 - Friday 14th July 2023 - Isle of Wight Residential Trip

Our Learning

Our new topic this half term is 'Fairgrounds'!  We all know that fairground rides are designed to ignite our senses, through fear, excitement and the unexpected but how does this happen? How are these rides powered in a way which enables them to speed up and slow down at just the right moments, whilst staying on a track that twists upside down? Throughout this unit we will be exploring and using the science behind the rides to understand how our favourite rides work!

As Scientists we will:

•Understand Newton’s 3 laws of motion.

•Understand how a hypothesis supports our scientific conclusions.

•Plan and carry out a fair test.

•Explore how friction affects movement.

•Understand the effect of different forces.

English

In English this half term we will be using our class book ‘The London Eye Mystery’ by Siobhan Dowd to explore a range of writing genres.

We will work on using punctuation accurately within our writing and incorporating a range of sentence structures to suit different genres. During Guided Reading we will develop our inference skills and give detailed responses to a question giving evidence to support our opinions.

Maths

We will continue to consolidate our arithmetic skills this term, practising strategies for using all four operations when calculating with whole numbers, fractions and decimals. We will also be applying our mathematical skills to solve problems involving ratio, algebra and units of measurement.

As Mathematicians we will:

•Solve a range of problems using reasoning skills.

•Explore angles within different shapes.

•Identify the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

•Interpret and produce graphs.
