Welcome to Year 5!

Our new topic this term is ‘The Holiday Show’ in which there will be a key focus on geography, especially understanding how countries physical and human features affect the tourism trade.

As geographers we will:

  • Explore identify places using lines of longitude and latitude
  • Examine makes a good travel destination and why
  • Explore what would make a person want to visit a certain location
  • Read and use different map scales
  • Identify the key features of a map of my local area
  • Explore, discuss and debate the benefits and issues with global tourism
  • Research and identify global sites of importance that are at risk due to tourism

We will to continue consolidate our arithmetic skills this term, practising different strategies for all four operations as well as developing our understanding of the relationship between angles and shape.

As Mathematicians we will:

  • Understand and use degrees
  • Classify angles
  • Measure angles up to 180 degrees
  • Draw lines and angles accurately using a protractor
  • Calculate angles around a point and on a straight line
  • Identify and measure angles in shapes
  • Explore the differences and rules around regular and irregular polygons.
  • Explore and investigate 3d shapes


In Reading and English this term we will be studying the text ‘The Explorer’ by Katherine Rundell. We will be using the Amazon jungle and river as the stimuli to create tension within an opening. Furthermore, both classes will be exploring how to create an effective formal letter of application - teaching the children the grammatical structures and text conventions required.
